We snake drains to clear blockages and tell you what we found. The key question is where the stoppage is: at one fixture or in a line that serves several. We explain it, give you the price first, and then do the work.
Where is the block
Run the test yourself. If only one fixture is stopped, the block is probably in its own pipe.
If two fixtures on different floors are affected, the shared line is the likelier suspect.
If the lowest drain in the house is rising, that points to the main line. We then follow the steps on our sewer page.
What snaking can do
A drain snake is a flexible cable that breaks through or retrieves a blockage. It works well on soft and stringy blocks.
It has limits. A collapsed or sagging pipe stays that way after the cable passes.
If the drain clears but the cause remains, we tell you.
Get a clear price
A written price for drain work should name the drain, the access point and what is included. It should say what happens if the cable does not clear it.
Ask what is charged if the work takes longer. We state this before we start.
Getting ready
Clear the area around the drain and the cleanout, if there is one. Remove items under the sink.
Tell us what you tried already. It saves time and avoids surprises.
What happens after
We run water through to confirm the drain moves. We explain what caused the block and what to avoid. If it is likely to return, we say so.
Questions we get asked
I have two blocked drains on different floors. Is that one problem?
Probably, if they share a branch or stack. A block below both points can back water into each. We test which fixtures are affected and where they join. That points us to where the cable should go.
What should a written price for snaking list?
The drain being cleared, the access point, the labour and what is covered if the first attempt does not work. It should also state any extra charge for further steps. We go through it with you before work begins.
How far can a drain snake reach?
Far enough for most household branch lines, but not unlimited. Tight bends, long runs and damaged pipe all limit it. If the cable cannot get past a point, we tell you where it stopped and why.
What if the drain will not clear?
We say so plainly and explain why. It may be a collapsed section, a long run needing different tools or a main line issue. You get the next option and its price. You are not charged for work you did not agree to.
Can snaking damage old pipes?
Careful snaking rarely does. Brittle or badly corroded pipe is a risk, and we tell you if we see it. We use the right cable size for the drain and stop if the pipe feels fragile.
Do I need to remove the drain stopper or trap first?
Not usually. We handle access ourselves, though a clear cabinet helps. Some drains are reached through a cleanout instead. Tell us what you see under the sink or on the floor when you call.
My building has a shared stack. Who clears a block there?
If the stoppage is in a shared pipe, the building owner or condo board is usually responsible. A block in your own branch is yours. We can help work out which it is and tell you who to contact.
